First ever pictures of executions Dutch army in Indonesia

For the first time in history, photos surfaced of executions, which were most likely carried out by the Dutch army during the police actions in the former Dutch East Indies.
The photographs come from the private album of a soldier who served as a conscript in the Dutch East Indies. In the pictures to see the liquidation of three Indonesians. They stand with their backs to the firing squad at the edge of a ditch when they are fired. The trench is filled with corpses of executed, according to a second photo. On the outskirts are two Dutch soldiers, recognizable by their uniform.

Never before Experts from the institute NIOD war and the Dutch Institute for Military History (NIMH) say such photographs never before seen. "They are not pictures everyday and it is certainly not every Indies Military these pictures brought home," said an employee of the NIMH. Even when similar pictures are NIOD unknown, said René Cook. "We have lots of albums here. You're waiting for the moment the picture pops up and it is now. Previously I have never seen. "

The consulted historians do not doubt the authenticity. The exact location nor the circumstances of the execution is known. Possible further research provides more details.
The author is a soldier from Enschede. He is now deceased. It was broadcast in 1947, shortly before the first police action, and he is only retrieved in 1950, after the handover. He served in the artillery. In the Corps are part of history makes no mention of executions. Supposedly, the only artillery assistance to the infantry or Special Forces, who have executions.

Known executions in the Javanese kampong Rawagede and South Sulawesi. The families of the victims of Rawagede was last year awarded damages. The state should respond to the lawsuit filed against the extrajudicial killings in South Sulawesi. How many Indonesians in both actions just died is not known.
The soldier has never publicized the existence of the photos. His albums would never have noticed if she had not recently found in a Dumpster in Enschede. Who has thrown them there, is not known. The owner of the albums was childless and would have lived only in recent years.

Dumpster An employee of the Municipal Enschede saw the old albums are in the dumpster and decided to fish them out. The municipality of Enschede collects more pictures to the life of its own citizens to illustrate. The albums would still have been laid aside, as the archivists were not alarmed by pictures of a prison transport. At that time the album they decided to take it again where they met with the pictures of the executions.
Recently three historical institutes called on the government to re-investigate the police actions between 1945 and 1950, to understand what war is conducted in Indonesia. The government has not yet responded.

Unusual Woodcarving

Unusual Woodcarving

Alexander Penteshin is a Russian painter, restorer and woodcarver. He creates carved furniture and pictures using various styles and techniques. He sticks lime bars together leaving bark on the side ones. It gives the impression that a picture is entirely carved out of a tree trunk. Pictures executed in this way are all unique as the traces of knots never repeat themselves…

Jeff Nishinaka is the world's premier paper sculptor.

Jeff Nishinaka is the world's premier paper sculptor. The stunning elegance of Jeff Nishinaka’s paper art calls for a new definition of paper. His meticulous sculptural 3D work appears to have been created from marble or extremely fine sand or vanilla ice cream or thick foam — definitely of something other than “just” paper. The Los Angeles-born artist works mainly with white, which makes the exquisite play of light and shadow a large part of the appeal of his work.

How to Make a Broken Lens Into a Flowerpot

What do you do when your camera dies? Go for the literal version of “pushing up daisies” and grow a plant in the broken remains of your lens!

Just slap on an old lens hood, fill it up with dirt and nestle a small plant into it.

That’s all it takes to make all your camera geek pals green with envy!

(Get it? “Green?” We crack ourselves up.)

Circuit board table

Circuit board table

Prompted by the Circuit Board Bench that we posted yesterday, commenter GuyInMilwaukee pointed us to his beautiful Computer Board Table. It's actually made of two tables, one on the inside to hold the computer boards, and one on the outside, that acts as the surface of the piece. Shadyman asked him how he chose the components to display, and it turns out that they are from his first computer:
It's mainly made up of boards/drives from old Intergraph 6000 series machines built in the late 80s early 90s. They had nice big boards.
It was a good way to keep around my first real computer after I could no longer find parts to keep it working, an Intergraph 6880 with Edge II graphics. I learned computer modeling, rendering and animation on it and think of it as a mentor. There are also old 2800 baud modem parts and other random parts collected over the years.
No real pattern other than just getting it all to fit together like a puzzle. The LED lights along the perimeter worked out better that I had hoped. I have it wired so it automatically goes on when it gets dark.

Chinese family suspected over needle in girl's brain

BEIJING (AFP) - – Doctors in southwestern China have removed a needle from the brain of an 11-year-old girl, believed inserted after birth in an attempted murder by relatives who had wanted a boy, a report said Thursday.

Rusted needle shards were detected by doctors in August after fruitless attempts by the girl's mother over the years to find the cause of an apparent mental disability, the Sichuan Online news website reported.

The girl, identified as "Ping Ping", did not begin walking or talking until she was six, currently has the intelligence level of a three-year-old, and has suffered for years from unexplained fevers, it said.

She was said to be recovering from the operation at a hospital in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province.

The child's mother, Yang Xiaohui, said she suspected that relatives had tried to kill the child shortly after birth.

Under China's "one child" family planning policy, the traditional cultural and economic preference for boys remains strong, especially in the vast and poor countryside.

Reports of aborted female foetuses and infanticide remain common.

In 2007, doctors in southwestern Yunnan province discovered 26 needles embedded in the body of a 29-year-old woman, state media said at the time.

They were believed to have been inserted not long after she was born by grandparents upset she was not a boy, the reports said. Doctors operated on the woman to remove the needles.

Why people always disappointed about having a baby girl? Can they just be happy that the baby born in healthy condition? Such a sick World we living on....

What To Look Out For In Travel Insurance

Sharing a good article written by Vincent Tong, iFast Financial
about how important the travel insurance.

One common issue when arranging travel is purchasing travel insurance. Some people assume that it is a waste of money, the travel agent is trying to make more money, or it is a good-to-have-but-not-necessary thing. But travel insurance is an important coverage for anyone when travelling.

It may not be pleasant to think of the things that could cause you to shorten, or even worse, cancel your vacation. But accidents do happen, no matter how well you plan for it. What if the travel agency defaults? What if you fall ill just before the trip? What if your baggage gets stolen during transit? What does Travel Insurance cover?

Some of the more common coverage for travel insurance includes:

Travel Cancellation
Covers loss of irredeemable travel and accommodation expenses paid in advance and occurring within 30 days before the trip.

Travel Postponement
Covers additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred and non-refundable or unutilised portion of travel costs prepaid in advance, if the trip is postponed.

Travel Delay
A cash benefit will be payable for every pre-specified number of hours of travel delay.

Baggage Delay
A cash benefit will be payable for everypre-specified number of hours the insured's baggage is delayed.

Loss or Damage to Baggage
Covers loss or damage to the insured's baggage and personal effects as a result of an accident occurring while overseas.

Personal Accident
Covers Death and Disablement resulting from an accident.

Medical Expenses Incurred Overseas
Covers medical expenses incurred for medical treatment received while overseas.

Medical Expenses Incurred in Singapore
Covers follow-up medical expenses within a pre-specified number of days from return date.

Hospitalization Allowance
A cash benefit will be payable for every complete day the insured is hospitalised overseas.

Emergency Medical Evacuation and Repatriation
If it is necessary to evacuate the insured to the nearest registered medical institution or return to Singapore in the case of an accident or illness, the insurer will pay for the cost of transportation and en-route medical care. In the event of death, the insurer will pay for the costs incurred in returning the body to Singapore.

Compassionate Visit by a Relative or Friend
If the insured is hospitalised overseas with no family member around, the insurer will reimburse the accommodation and travelling expenses incurred for a relative or friend to fly over and remain with the insured.

However, do note that policy wordings differ between insurers, so the benefits and type of coverage would be different. The amount of coverage is also subject to the type of plan that you purchase.

Why Buy Travel Insurance?

Planning for a holiday should be a happy event, so thinking of travel insurance - which is closely related to thinking of how things could go wrong during the holiday - is definitely not the most thrilling topic to consider.

Most people go for their vacations, enjoy themselves and come home without any unfortunate incidents, but a small percentage of people will find that their holiday has transformed into a nightmare. An unforeseen accident may occur, their flights get cancelled, or they lose their travel documents. In such circumstances, trying to get help could not only get extremely expensive, but also horribly stressful. And people end up thinking, "If I had purchased travel insurance, I wouldn't have to fork out the additional $4,000 for hospitalisation expenses..."

The most important benefit of buying travel insurance is the peace of mind it grants to the traveller. It protects you and your trip. It covers you for medical expenses and accidents, and protects your trip in the event of a flight delay or trip cancellation.

Things To Look Out For

1) Buy it early
Buy your travel insurance early, pref¬erably right after booking the trip. It may not be something to look forward to - another upfront pay¬ment right after paying for the holi¬day - but at least one of the key coverage, travel cancellation, is still valid. Buy it one day before your trip, and you are practically throwing this benefit away.

2) Cover the whole time you are away
This may sound obvious, but some people actually do not cover them¬selves for the whole trip. Make sure you cover yourself for the full trip, even if you depart from Singapore late at night on the first day and return early in the morning on the last day.

3) Check what is included
Other than the standard coverage mentioned above, check whether you need anything extra. If you are going overseas for activities like skiing, scuba diving or mountain climbing, make sure that the policy covers these activities specifically to ensure that in the event of an accident, you will still be covered.

It may not sound like the most interesting thing to do, but read through the policy details to understand the definition of each coverage. Either that, or get an expert or financial adviser to explain to you what each term represents.

4) Check what is not included
Premiums aren't everything. A cheap travel insurance policy may seem like a good bargain, but make sure you go through the policy details carefully to ensure that important coverage is not omitted.

Coverage does not include accidents that occur while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Pre-existing conditions are not covered as well. If you did not take the proper and reasonable precautions to prevent any accidents, the insurer may not accept the claim too. For example, if you did not lock your hotel room and your baggage gets stolen, don't expect your claim to be successful. The travel insurance policy isn't for you to behave more recklessly than you normally would!

Finally, read through the fine print. You may be surprised to find out what it says.

5) Single trip or annual trip? Individual or family policy? Will you be going on a single trip only?

Most people take two to three holidays a year, and an annual trip policy would probably be the best value for money. But do note the area of coverage. An annual trip policy covering only ASEAN countries will not cover a holiday to New Zealand, for example. Also, annual trip policies usually cover a limited number of days per trip, so it's definitely not for you if you plan to travel for a few months.

If you are travelling as a family, a family policy might be the better-priced option. Family policies usually cover one or two adults traveling with any number of children. However, note that some insurers impose a limit on the amount of coverage for children.

6) Keep all relevant travel documents
When travelling, remember to bring your travel insurance policy document and the insurer's 24-hour emergency hotline. Keep all relevant documents and paperwork, like receipts, medical bills, and police reports. They will be required as evidence when making a claim.

7) Do some research before the trip
The term "research" here doesn't refer to which hotel to stay at or which places to visit in the country. It is about other issues, like how the weather is? Is the crime rate high? Will you be renting a car to drive? These will give you a better idea of what precautions to take and which travel insurance policy to purchase.

8) How much travel insurance to buy?
This depends largely on the cost of your trip. For a short trip to a nearby country, you may just want to purchase a cheaper plan with lower coverage. For a major trip to, say, Europe, you could consider buying a plan with higher coverage.

The Bottom Line
Buy travel insurance, no matter where you are going. It's affordable - $30 may be able to cover you for a 4-day trip to Thailand, depending on the insurer and type of plan you purchase. Be aware of any specific coverage you require and choose a policy that covers it. And buy it early, preferably right after you have confirmed your trip.
Travellers may be diligent about planning for their vacation, but some fail to plan for the unplanned - the things that happen beyond the scope of our control. Travel insurance is the kind of insurance you hope you never need to use, but you will definitely be glad to have it in times of need.

My personal experience: When i travel around October 2008 to Hongkong for 3 days only, there was a typhoon for few days there. On the third day i travel to airport hoping that the typhoon is stop. Once i reach there, they said all the flight has been canceled. Canceled for 8 hours, so decided to go back to hotel and spend 1 more night. The on the next day me an my family go back to my hometown. Since i bought a travel insurance, i claim my travel insurance and earn quite a lot from it. This kind of things is unpredictable. So for me travel insurance is very important.
